Alfred, a Kanien’kehaka (Mohawk) scholar, reminds us that the word Canadais derived from a Kanien’kehaka term, Kanatiens, which means “they sit in our village.”A contemporary translation of this term would be “squatter.” Given the origins ofCanada, what can descendants of squatters or settlers offer Indigenous peoples by way ofreconciliation? Where does one start in terms of reconciling Canada?
